Grass cutting is the bread and butter of what we do. Most weeks you'll find us out cutting lawns across Horley, Crawley and Reigate, from little front gardens on terraced streets to big family plots. Weekly, fortnightly, or just the once to tame something that's got away from you. We cut it, edge it, and take every last clipping away with us.
More often than most people think in summer, less than you'd fear the rest of the year. Grass really gets going once the soil warms up, usually late March or April, and it keeps growing until about October. Through the main season a weekly cut keeps a lawn thick and healthy. In spring and autumn, once a fortnight is usually plenty.
There's a simple rule the good lawns live by: never take off more than a third of the height in one go. Cut little and often and the grass stays dense and green. Let it grow long and then scalp it back, and you stress the plant, weaken the roots, and leave gaps for moss and weeds to move into. That's why a regular visit beats waiting until the lawn's a foot high and panicking.
For an ordinary family lawn we cut to around an inch in summer, a little higher in spring and autumn. In a dry spell we deliberately leave it longer. Longer grass shades its own roots, holds moisture, and stays green when a scalped lawn next door has gone brown. People worry about browning in July, but an established lawn nearly always greens straight back up when the rain returns, so there's rarely any need to water it.
The stripes everyone loves aren't two types of grass. They're just light bouncing off blades bent in different directions, which is why you need a mower with a rear roller to lay them in. We run roller mowers, so you get that proper striped, looked-after finish rather than the ragged look a cheap wheeled mower leaves.
A lawn can be cut perfectly and still look half-done if the edges are woolly. Strimming and edging are two different jobs. Strimming knocks down the grass the mower can't reach, around trees, posts and fences. Edging is the vertical cut along the border that gives you that crisp line between lawn and bed. We do both, because that clean edge is what makes a garden read as cared-for.
And we don't cut wet. Mowing a soaking lawn tears the grass instead of slicing it, clogs the mower, and compacts the soil underneath, which does more harm than good. If it's been hammering down we'll wait for it to dry off or come back the next dry day. We'll always let you know.
Through the growing season, March to October, weekly is ideal in summer and fortnightly in spring and autumn. In winter the grass mostly stops, so it can be left. We adjust the schedule with the seasons so you don't have to think about it.
We start when the grass begins growing again, usually late March or April depending on the weather, with a high first cut to just take the tips off. We carry on until growth tails off in October or so, raising the height as the year ends. We don't cut wet, frosty or frozen ground.
Yes. Wet grass tears rather than cuts cleanly, clumps up and clogs the mower, and the weight on soft ground compacts the soil. If it's too wet to do a proper job we'll reschedule to the next dry day rather than make a mess of it.
Every time, as standard. We collect all the clippings and take them with us, so you're never left with bags of grass or an overflowing garden bin.
It depends on the size of the lawn, how often we visit, and how much edging and strimming there is. Regular visits work out cheaper per cut than one-offs. Give us a ring and we'll pop round and give you a straight price, no obligation.
Yes, we do it all the time. If it's badly overgrown we'll bring it down in stages over a visit or two rather than scalping it in one go, which would shock the grass. Then we'll get it onto a regular schedule so it never gets that bad again.
