Seasonal Garden Services

The right jobs at the right time of year

A garden wants different things in March than it does in October. Spring's about waking it up, summer's about keeping on top of it, autumn's about clearing down and getting ahead, winter's about the structural jobs. We work to the seasons so your garden gets what it actually needs, when it needs it.

Spring and summer

Spring is the busy reset: cutting back last year's growth, the first mows on a high setting, mulching the borders while the soil's moist, and getting ahead of the weeds before they establish. Get spring right and the rest of the year is easier.

Through summer it's the regular rhythm, mowing, edging, deadheading, and the main hedge-cutting window in late summer once we've checked for nesting birds. Beech and hornbeam hedges get their single annual cut in August.

Autumn and winter

Autumn is leaf clearance season, keeping leaves off the lawn and out of the borders before they smother things, and it's actually the best time of year for planting and for the big hedge reductions, with the nesting season over and the soil still warm. We'll get the last cut in around October as growth tails off.

Winter is the structural work most people don't think about: renovating deciduous hedges while they're dormant and leafless, pruning roses in late winter, mulching, and tidying ready for spring. It's quiet, unglamorous stuff, but it's what sets the garden up for the year ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Late February into March is the time to start. We clear off winter debris, cut back last year's growth, mulch the borders and get the lawn ready for the growing season. Getting ahead in early spring makes the whole year easier.

Yes. Through autumn we keep leaves cleared off lawns and out of borders, where left alone they smother the grass and plants. It's part of the regular schedule for our maintenance customers, or we can do it as a one-off.

Not if you're on a regular schedule, it's all built in. Leaf clearance, spring prep, the late-summer hedge cut, they happen automatically as the year turns. If you're not a regular customer, we're happy to do seasonal jobs as one-offs.

Some work is best done when plants are dormant. Deciduous hedges are renovated in winter while they're leafless, and roses are pruned in late winter as growth starts to move. Doing these jobs at the right time gives much better results than tackling them whenever.
