Garden weeding and borders in Bletchingley
Hand weeding, mulching and planting for beds on light, fast-draining greensand.
Garden weeding in Bletchingley is easier than in a lot of places round here, and that’s down to the sand. Weeds come out of light soil roots and all, where on clay you’d snap them off and watch them come back. The catch is that the same soil dries out and goes hungry, so a weeded bed left bare can look tired by July.
So our garden weeding services come with feeding the soil too. We hand weed, mulch while the ground is moist, cut back and divide perennials, and put in bulbs and seasonal bedding where you want colour. All the waste leaves with us.
What we do
- Regular hand-weeding of borders and beds
- Mulching to suppress weeds and feed the soil
- Cutting back and tidying through the seasons
- Lifting and dividing overgrown perennials
- Seasonal bedding, bulb planting and container care
- Bringing neglected borders back to order

Mulch is the secret on greensand
A good layer of composted bark or well-rotted organic matter does a lot of good on sandy ground. It holds moisture in and slowly feeds a soil that loses nutrients quickly. It also smothers the weed seedlings that would otherwise pop up after every shower. We lay it on damp soil, never dry, and top it up each year. Within a couple of seasons the beds stay greener through summer and need far less weeding.
Garden border maintenance through the year
Spring is cutting back old growth and getting ahead of the first flush of weeds. Summer is little and often, a weed and deadhead each visit. Autumn is dividing crowded clumps, planting bulbs and clearing collapsed stems. Volunteers from Bletchingley in Bloom have planted more than 8,000 daffodils around the village’s public spaces, and if you’d like a show of your own, October and November are the months to get bulbs in.
Borders & Planting in Bletchingley: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
How do you weed between plants without damaging them?
By hand and with a hand fork, which works well in Bletchingley’s light soil because roots come out cleanly. On a neglected bed we do a thorough first weed, then keep it down with mulch and regular visits.
Can you just weed the borders, without a full maintenance visit?
Yes. Plenty of people looking for weeding services near me only want the beds sorted. We can do a one-off, or come back every few weeks through the growing season.
What grows well in sandy Bletchingley soil?
Plants that like it free-draining: lavender, rosemary, salvias, sedums, cistus and most ornamental grasses. Thirsty plants like hydrangeas need extra mulch and some shade. We’re happy to suggest swaps for anything that keeps sulking.
