Topiary & Ornamental Hedging in Newdigate

Topiary in Newdigate

Clipped box, yew and privet shapes kept sharp in Newdigate gardens, old and new.

Topiary in Newdigate suits the older houses well. Around St Peter’s and along Village Street, several old cottages and farmhouses are listed buildings, and a pair of clipped balls by a front door, or a yew cone at the end of a path, looks right beside them. It needs a patient eye and regular trimming to stay crisp. That’s the kind of careful work we enjoy.

We look after existing shapes, tidy up ones that have lost their outline, and keep formal hedging square and sharp along paths and boundaries. Every trimming is collected, which matters with box, because diseased leaves left lying about spread trouble to the rest of the garden.

What we do

  • Box ball, cone and pyramid shaping and upkeep
  • Spiral, pyramid and custom topiary shapes
  • Formal hedging with crisp tops and clean edges
  • Yew, box, privet and laurel ornamental work
  • Regular trims to keep shapes defined
  • Honest advice on box blight, box moth and alternatives

Topiary in Newdigate: when and how often to clip

Box and privet get clipped once or twice a year, usually in late spring and again in late summer. Yew grows more slowly and usually needs just one cut in late summer. Clay keeps them all well fed, so privet shapes blur faster on this ground than you’d think, and an extra summer trim is often worth it. We use hand shears on small pieces and keep the cuts light. Good topiary pruning holds a line. It doesn’t hack it back.

Box blight, box moth and what to plant instead

Box blight and the box tree caterpillar have done real damage to box across much of the country. If your topiary balls have gone brown and bare in patches, we’ll tell you honestly whether they’re worth saving. Sometimes better hygiene and lighter clipping are enough. Sometimes it’s time to replace them, and yew or small-leaved holly make sturdy alternatives that clip just as well. We’d rather say that than keep trimming a plant that’s dying.

Topiary balls in pots are a slightly different case. They dry out faster than plants in the ground, even on clay, so a summer of underwatering can show up as browning that looks a lot like blight.

Topiary in Newdigate: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Can you rescue topiary that’s lost its shape?

Usually. If there’s enough healthy growth we’ll clip back towards the shape over one or two seasons. Box and yew both recover well as long as you don’t take too much at once.

Do you create new topiary?

We can start shaping young plants and keep them on track. Big sculpted pieces take years, but a ball, a cone or a simple spiral is well within reach.

How much does topiary cost to maintain?

It depends how many pieces you have and how intricate they are. It’s easiest and cheapest folded into a regular visit. Tell us roughly what you’ve got and we’ll firm up a fixed price once we’ve seen it.
