Lawn Mowing & Grass Cutting in Outwood

Grass cutting in Outwood

Roller-striped lawns for Outwood’s bigger village plots, cut on dry days and cleared every visit.

Outwood lawns tend to be big. Over half the homes in the parish are detached, and a back lawn running down to a field boundary takes a while to cut properly. Our grass cutting in Outwood is set up for that: a rear-roller Hayter for the stripes, a strimmer for fence lines and pond edges, and every clipping bagged and taken away.

We’re a local lawn mowing service, based four miles away in Horley, so an Outwood round fits easily into the week. Nearly all of it is residential lawn mowing service work, for people who’d rather walk the dog round the common on a Saturday than push a mower up and down.

What we do

  • Regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly grass cutting
  • Striped finish with a rear-roller mower
  • Crisp edging along paths, borders and driveways
  • Strimming around trees, posts, fences and obstacles
  • All clippings collected and taken away, every visit
  • Cutting height adjusted through the seasons and in dry spells

More about lawn mowing

Grass cutting on clay: choosing the right day

The village sits on Weald Clay, and the clay sets the timetable. After a wet week the top few centimetres turn to paste, and a mower on that ground tears the grass and squashes the soil flat. So we don’t cut when it’s wet or frozen. We’d rather come back the next dry morning. In spring that can mean a slower start here than on lighter soils up towards the Downs. Then the season runs hard. Clay holds nutrients well, and between May and July a lawn in Outwood can put on an inch or more in a week.

Long grass, ponds and the National Trust next door

Plenty of gardens here border farmland or woodland on the Harewoods estate, and the National Trust has deliberately mown less on Outwood Common, letting much of it turn to wildflower meadow. It now has over a hundred spotted orchids. There’s nothing wrong with borrowing the idea. If you’d like a strip of long grass at the bottom of the garden, we’ll mow a crisp edge along it and a path through it, and leave the rest until late summer. Near ponds we strim rather than mow, and keep well back from soft banks.

Lawn Mowing in Outwood: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

How often should a lawn in Outwood be cut?

Weekly through early summer if you want it looking sharp, fortnightly either side of that. A large rural lawn cut only monthly gets rough and weedy, and you lose the striped finish. For lawn mowing in Outwood, fortnightly suits most gardens.

Can you cut a paddock or a field-sized area?

A big lawn or an orchard area with trees dotted through it is fine. Genuinely field-sized rough grass is a tractor and topper job, and we’ll tell you so rather than take it on badly.

How much does grass cutting cost in Outwood?

It depends on the size of the lawn, how much strimming there is round ponds, fences and trees, and how often we come. Regular visits work out cheaper per cut than one-offs. We’ll walk it with you and give you a fixed price.

My lawn is half moss after winter. Should you still cut it?

Yes, but high to begin with, just taking the tops off. Mowing short on mossy clay makes things worse. Once the ground firms up and the grass is growing strongly, we bring the height down a notch at a time.
