Topiary and clipped hedging in Brockham
Box, yew and clipped shapes kept sharp for cottage fronts and formal gardens in the village.
Topiary in Brockham suits the older houses round the green, where a pair of topiary balls by the door or a low clipped edge along the path fits the age of the building. A neat shape makes a small front garden look deliberate. It needs a steady hand and regular attention, though, or the outline goes soft within a season.
We clip box, yew, privet and laurel, keep existing shapes true and can start new ones from young plants. Shears do the fine work, and every clipping is cleared away, including the small bits that drop into gravel and lawn edges, which matters with box if there’s any sign of blight.

Box blight and box moth in village gardens
Box has had a hard few years. Box blight causes brown patches and bare stems and spreads in warm, wet weather. Box tree caterpillar strips plants from the inside, so the damage is often worse than it looks from the path. We check for both on every visit, clip in dry weather and clean tools between gardens. If a box hedge is past saving we’ll say so, and suggest alternatives such as yew that take a clipped shape well.
Topiary pruning through the year
Box is usually clipped in late May or June and again in late summer. Yew wants one main cut in August or September. Clipping on an overcast day stops freshly cut leaves scorching. On the clay south of the river box and yew grow strongly and stay a good dark green. On the sandy soil north of it they can yellow in a dry summer, so a spring mulch and feed help them hold their colour.
Topiary in Brockham: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
Can you restore a shape that’s lost its form?
Usually. We cut back gradually over a season or two, finding the old shape rather than forcing a new one. Yew recovers from hard cutting far better than box does.
Can you look after box balls in containers?
Yes. Potted box dries out quickly, so we check the compost, trim the plant and tell you if it needs a bigger pot or fresh compost.
Could you start a new shape from scratch?
Yes, from young plants or an existing shrub with the right growth. Balls, cones and simple spirals are realistic. Anything more elaborate takes years, and we’ll be honest about how long.
