Hedge Trimming & Hedge Cutting in Charlwood

Hedge trimming in Charlwood

Lane-side and garden hedges in Charlwood, cut outside nesting season and cleared away.

Charlwood is a parish of long boundaries. Head out along the lanes towards Norwood Hill or Russ Hill and the hedges keep going, and out here a house’s front boundary is as likely to be a hedge as a wall. Hedge trimming in Charlwood often means a run of mixed native hedge along the lane and a neater garden hedge behind the house.

We cut both. Laurel is done by hand so the leaves don’t brown at the edges, privet and beech get a trimmer, and conifers are only ever cut back within the green. Every hedge is checked for nests before we start, and all the trimmings leave with us.

What we do

  • Regular hedge cutting on a schedule that suits the species
  • One-off cuts to bring overgrown hedges back under control
  • All types: privet, laurel, leylandii, box, beech, hornbeam, yew and more
  • Height and width reductions, staged where needed
  • Laurel cut by hand so the leaves don’t brown
  • Nesting birds checked before any work, all cuttings cleared away

Hedge cutting and the birds nesting law

With Glover’s Wood on the edge of the village and fields all round, Charlwood hedges are busy with birds. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to damage or destroy an active nest, and the main nesting season runs roughly March to August. So the big cuts and reductions go between September and February. In summer we’ll only do a light tidy, and only after a proper look through. If there’s a nest, that stretch waits.

Hedge trimming in the Charlwood conservation area

The centre of the village has been a conservation area since 1974. Hedges there are part of how the street looks, so they want shaping rather than simply shortening. A slight taper, wider at the base than the top, lets light reach the bottom and keeps the hedge green right down to the ground. Trees growing in a hedge line are another matter. Work to trees in a conservation area needs six weeks’ notice to the council, and it’s a job for an arborist, not us.

Hedge Trimming in Charlwood: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

How much does hedge trimming cost in Charlwood?

It depends on length, height, species and how overgrown it is, and lane-side hedges can run a long way. We’ll walk it with you, then give you a fixed price that includes taking the trimmings away.

Can you cut the lane side of my hedge?

Usually, yes, where it’s safe to work. On narrow lanes we plan around traffic and often start early in the day when it’s quieter. We’ll talk it through when we come to look.

How often should a garden hedge be cut here?

Privet and laurel often need two or three trims a year on this rich clay. Beech and hornbeam are happy with one main cut in early autumn, once nesting has finished. We’ll suggest a timetable that suits your hedges.
