If you’re looking for a gardener in Charlwood, we’re about two and a half miles away in Horley, and we’ve been looking after gardens round here since 2004. The village sits on the far side of Gatwick from most people’s idea of Surrey. Old houses, a lot of hedge, and clay underfoot almost everywhere you put a spade in.

The parish is bigger than the street through the middle. It takes in Hookwood towards Horley and the higher ground at Norwood Hill and Russ Hill. Gardens change with it. Around the church you’ll find cottage plots inside a conservation area that’s been in place since 1974. Out on the lanes, there are plenty of detached houses with fields beyond the fence.

At the 2011 census, two in every five households here lived in a detached house. That goes some way to explaining why so much of our Charlwood work is lawns and long boundaries rather than courtyards.

Grass and hedges, mainly. The old county history describes the parish soil as entirely Wealden Clay, with a ridge of Paludina limestone lifting Stan Hill, Norwood Hill and Russ Hill above the rest. On the clay, lawns stay soft well into spring and hedges grow as if they’re paid by the inch. A fortnightly maintenance visit suits most homes: cut, edge, weed, trim and take the lot away. Bigger plots can need weekly visits in May and June, easing off once the clay dries and growth slows.

Charlwood’s non-domestic ground is varied. There’s St Nicholas, a Grade I listed church with a listed stone causeway running through its churchyard, and the Rec, held in trust by the parish council.
