Lawn Mowing & Grass Cutting in Dorking

Lawn mowing in Dorking

Weekly or fortnightly cuts that suit Dorking’s mix of sandy hillsides and heavy valley clay.

Lawn mowing in Dorking isn’t one job, it’s two. A lawn on the sandy greensand round the Nower or up by Glory Wood drains in hours and scorches in a dry June. A lawn on the Gault clay along the Pipp Brook stays soft for days after rain. So we set the cutting height and choose the day of each visit by which of those you’ve got, not by a rota.

We come over from Horley, about eight miles east, and cut with rear-roller Hayter mowers, so the stripes are proper ones. Edges are trimmed every visit and every clipping goes in the van. If you’ve been after a local lawn mowing service that notices when your grass is struggling, rather than just running over it, that’s us.

What we do

  • Regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly grass cutting
  • Striped finish with a rear-roller mower
  • Crisp edging along paths, borders and driveways
  • Strimming around trees, posts, fences and obstacles
  • All clippings collected and taken away, every visit
  • Cutting height adjusted through the seasons and in dry spells

Lawn Mowing & Grass Cutting in Dorking

Lawn mowing in Dorking on sandy ground

Greensand warms quickly in spring, which is lovely, and dries out quickly in summer, which isn’t. The Hythe Beds under the south of town are a soft, iron-rich sandstone, and the Folkestone Beds carry veins of silver sand. Neither holds much water. On these lawns we raise the blades early, often by late May, and drop to fortnightly once growth stalls in the heat. Longer grass shades its own roots. It’s the difference between a lawn that browns for a fortnight and one that browns for two months.

Why we leave clay lawns alone after heavy rain

The other half of town behaves the opposite way. Gault is a dark, shaly clay, and on the north side of the brook it holds water like a sponge. Run a mower over it the day after a downpour and the wheels press the soil flat, the blades tear the grass, and you’ve laid the groundwork for next spring’s moss. We won’t do it. If your lawn’s soaked or frozen, we’ll move the visit to the next dry day and let you know.

Sloping lawns are common on the hillier roads. We mow across a slope where it’s safe and strim the banks a mower can’t hold.

Lawn Mowing in Dorking: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

How much does lawn mowing cost in Dorking?

It comes down to the size of the lawn, how easy it is to get a mower to it, and how often you want us. A regular residential lawn mowing service costs less per cut than an occasional visit. We’ll walk the garden and give you a fixed price, free.

Can you cut a steep lawn?

Usually, yes, but we’ll look first. Gentle slopes we mow across, steep banks we strim. If a bank is genuinely unsafe to mow, we’ll tell you rather than risk it.

Do I need weekly cuts in summer?

On a clay lawn in May and June, weekly keeps up with the flush of growth. On a sandy lawn that dries fast, fortnightly with the blades set higher is usually kinder from midsummer.
