Hedge trimming in Earlswood
Front hedges, back boundaries and the odd holly, cut at the right time and cleared away.
Hedge trimming in Earlswood covers a real mix. The Victorian streets have front hedges that need keeping neat and low. Later estates often have taller boundaries between back gardens. And up at St Johns, holly is part of the place: the council’s draft appraisal names the holly hedge around the church as the most prominent boundary there, and says holly turns up in other hedges nearby.
Clay is generous to hedges. It’s fertile and it holds moisture, so privet, laurel and conifers put on a lot of growth each year on the lower ground. Miss a cut and you’ll notice. We trim, shape and reduce where needed, and every bit of the cuttings leaves with us. Searching for a hedge trimming service near me from RH1? Our Horley base is about four miles down the A23.
What we do
- Regular hedge cutting on a schedule that suits the species
- One-off cuts to bring overgrown hedges back under control
- All types: privet, laurel, leylandii, box, beech, hornbeam, yew and more
- Height and width reductions, staged where needed
- Laurel cut by hand so the leaves don’t brown
- Nesting birds checked before any work, all cuttings cleared away

When is hedge cutting season in the UK, and why we keep to it
Birds nest in garden hedges through spring and summer, and it’s an offence to damage an active nest. So we plan the main hedge cuts for September to February, and we check every hedge for nests before we start. A light trim in summer can be fine, but only once we’ve had a proper look. Gardens backing onto Earlswood Common have woodland, ponds and two lakes on the doorstep, so there’s plenty of birdlife about and the check really matters here.
Hedge trimming for holly, conservation hedges and runaway boundaries
Holly is slow and prickly, and it doesn’t take kindly to hacking. We cut it carefully in winter and keep the face slightly tapered so the base stays green. In the St Johns conservation area, hedges are part of the street scene, and the appraisal points to mixed native hedges, sometimes set inside timber palisade fences. If a tree is growing up through a hedge there, we leave it alone. Tree work in a conservation area needs six weeks’ notice to the council, and it’s a job for an arborist. Overgrown boundaries elsewhere we bring down in stages over a season or two.
Hedge Trimming in Earlswood: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
Can you cut back a hedge that’s grown over the pavement?
Yes. We’ll cut it back to the boundary and get it onto a regular schedule. If it’s badly overgrown we take the bulk off in winter and tidy the face the following year, so it greens back up.
Do you cut laurel with a hedge trimmer?
Where we can, we cut laurel by hand with secateurs. Powered trimmers slice the big leaves in half and the cut edges go brown, which looks scruffy for months.
How often does a hedge need trimming here?
Most garden hedges in Earlswood want one main cut a year and a light trim in late summer. Fast growers like privet and leylandii might need two or three. We’ll suggest a schedule that suits what you’ve actually got.
How much is hedge trimming?
It depends on length, height, how far it’s grown and whether we can reach both sides. We’ll look and give you a fixed price, with the waste removal included.
