A long striped back garden behind a Victorian terrace

Your local gardener in Earlswood

Lawns, hedges and borders between Earlswood Common and the greensand ridge, four miles from our Horley base.

If you’re looking for a gardener in Earlswood, we’re about four miles down the A23 in Horley, and we’ve been gardening round here since 2004. Earlswood is a patch worth knowing well. It sits right where the greensand ridge drops away to the Weald, so two gardens a few hundred metres apart can behave as if they were in different counties.

Most of the housing is Victorian, much of it terraced and semi-detached, and about half of it is in South Earlswood. East of the railway there’s Whitebushes, built in the 1970s and early 1980s, and Royal Earlswood Park, the houses and flats that grew up around the old hospital. Each comes with its own kind of garden, and its own kind of problem.

Clay below the common, sand up towards St Johns

The council’s management plan for Earlswood Common describes the soil under most of it as Weald Clay that waterlogs in winter and bakes and cracks in hot weather. That’s the story for a lot of gardens around the lakes and southwards. Climb towards St Johns and it changes to freely draining, slightly acid loam with low natural fertility. Where the sand meets the clay you get spring lines, which is why some lawns stay soggy long after the rain has stopped. We plan every visit with that in mind, and we won’t mow a lawn that’s waterlogged.

What people in Earlswood book us for

Regular maintenance is the big one, usually fortnightly in the growing season: mowing, edging, weeding and a trim of the hedges in one visit, with everything taken away. Plenty of terraced plots have no side access, so we’re used to carrying kit through a hallway. Hedge cutting comes next, especially the taller boundaries on later estates. And every autumn the oaks on and around the common drop their leaves into the gardens that back onto it.

Commercial grounds in and around Earlswood

Earlswood is mostly homes, but there’s still a fair amount of shared ground: communal areas at Royal Earlswood Park, the schools on St John’s Road and Brambletye Park Road, churchyards, and the odd business frontage on the main road. For sites like these we write an annual schedule, agree a fixed price invoiced monthly or quarterly, and send itemised quotes. We’ll happily price against your existing spec, and insurance certificates are available on request.

Gardening in Earlswood: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Do you cover the whole of Earlswood?

Yes. North and South Earlswood, Whitebushes, Royal Earlswood Park and St Johns, along with Meadvale and Redhill next door. It’s a short run up the A23 from Horley, so any Earlswood garden is easy to fit in.

Do I need to be home when you come?

No. Earlswood has its own station on the Brighton Main Line, and plenty of people are on a train before we start at 7am. As long as we can get into the garden, you don’t need to be in.

How much does a gardener cost in Earlswood?

It depends on the size of the garden, how easy it is to get to and how often you’d like us. We’ll come out, walk round it with you and give you a fixed quote, free. Ring 07720 886244.
