Churches, parish councils and community grounds in Outwood

Churchyard grass cutting in Outwood

Careful mowing and strimming for Outwood’s Victorian churchyard and the parish’s shared green spaces.

Outwood’s church is two centuries younger than its windmill. St John the Baptist was built in 1869, when Outwood was still a hamlet with no church, and the following year a new parish was carved out of parts of five neighbours. It’s Grade II listed, with a war memorial cross in the churchyard beside the south porch. Churchyard grass cutting in Outwood means working carefully round that memorial and the graves near it.

The church stands on the north side of Brickfield Road, about a mile from the village centre, with National Trust farmland, common and woodland all round it. A setting like that calls for a light touch: tidy paths and mown grass near the building, and room for longer grass further out if the parish wants it.

What we look after

  • Churchyard paths and mown areas
  • Careful strimming round headstones
  • Hedges and boundary walls kept clear
  • Village greens and verges
  • Wildflower areas on a late-summer cut
  • Leaf clearance from paths and porches
  • Church paths gritted ahead of services in icy weather

Churches, parish councils and community grounds in Outwood

Churchyard grass cutting that respects the stones

Old headstones lean, chip and crack, and a mower deck can do real damage. So round graves and the war memorial we strim slowly by hand, and we keep paths clear for visitors, weddings and funerals. Before each visit we check the diary with the churchwarden or parish office, so we’re never there during a service. Where parts of the churchyard are kept for wildflowers, we cut once in late summer and take the cuttings away, which is much the same approach that’s turned so much of Outwood Common into meadow.

Parish council grass cutting contracts and community spaces

Outwood has had its own parish council since 2000. A parish council grass cutting contract here might cover a play area, a hall or a run of verges. Send us the specification and we’ll price it line by line, or we’ll walk the sites with a councillor and write one together. You’ll get a fixed price and a written schedule, invoiced monthly or quarterly, and the same team every visit.

Churches and councils in Outwood: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Can you mow paths through long grass in the churchyard?

Yes. We’ll keep mown paths through the longer areas so visitors can reach every grave, then cut and collect the long grass once flowering has finished in late summer.

Do you cut grass for sports clubs and village halls?

We can mow outfields and surrounds and tidy round club grounds and halls. Preparing a cricket square is specialist work, though, and we’d leave that to the club’s groundsman.

Can you quote against our existing churchyard maintenance spec?

Yes. Send it over and we’ll price each item. If you haven’t got one, we’ll walk the churchyard with the churchwarden and agree a cutting regime that fits the parish’s wishes.

Walk the site with us.

We’ll come out, look at the grounds with you and send a written schedule and a fixed price for the year.
