Topiary & Ornamental Hedging in Salfords

Topiary in Salfords

Clipped balls, cones and formal edges in Salfords gardens, kept sharp by hand.

Topiary in Salfords has an easy start and a hard finish. The rich Weald Clay means yew, box and privet fill out quickly, so a new shape comes together faster than on thin, sandy soil. Keeping the lines sharp is the harder part, because the same vigour blurs them within weeks.

We trim box balls, cones, spirals and formal low hedging by hand, and look after topiary in pots by the front door as well. The clippings get swept up and taken away, and we’ll tell you honestly if a plant is struggling.

More about topiary

Long yew hedges along a paved path

Topiary pruning on rich clay

Most box and privet shapes here want two trims a year: one in early summer once the first flush has hardened, and one in late summer to sharpen them for winter. Yew can manage on one cut in August. Don’t trim late in autumn, because new shoots won’t harden off before the frost. Yew is the plant we’d recommend for anything permanent. It’s slow to get going, but it’s the one common conifer that will green up from old wood, so an overgrown yew shape can almost always be rescued.

Box blight in a damp village

Box blight likes humid, still air, and a sheltered garden near the Salfords Stream can be a perfect spot for it. Box tree caterpillar has spread across the south east as well. We’ll look over your plants while we trim and say plainly whether they’re worth saving. Thinning to let air through and clearing fallen leaves helps. If a plant has gone too far, yew or Ilex crenata make good replacements, and a fresh pair of topiary balls by the door can be the better answer.

Topiary in Salfords: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Which plants work best for topiary here?

Yew is the most reliable on clay. Privet and Lonicera nitida grow fast and shape well. Box still works if it’s healthy and gets good air movement.

Can you shape an existing shrub into topiary?

Often, if it’s yew, box, privet or similar. It takes a few seasons of patient trimming to build up a clean shape.

How do I spot box tree caterpillar?

Look for webbing and bleached, chewed leaves inside the plant in spring and summer. Catch it early and the plant has a far better chance.

How much does topiary trimming cost?

It depends on how many pieces you have, their size and how detailed the shapes are. We’ll give you a fixed price after seeing them.
