Neatly mown front lawns along a quiet residential street

Your local gardener in Salfords

Gardens and grounds in Salfords, looked after from Horley, a few minutes down the A23.

If you’re after a gardener in Salfords, we’re about two and a half miles away in Horley, and the village was actually part of Horley until the 1970s. We’ve been working gardens round here since 2004. It’s a short run up the A23, so moving a visit to the next dry morning is easy.

The name is thought to mean a ford by the willows, which tells you something about the ground. Salfords sits on Weald Clay, and the Salfords Stream runs right through the middle, with soft alluvium along its banks. Gardens near the water stay wet for a long time after rain.

Most people here ask us for the same few things: a regular mowing visit, hedges kept in hand, and borders weeded before they become a whole weekend’s work. Plenty of those turn into a fortnightly visit that covers the lot, with the green waste taken away each time. The rest are one-off jobs, like a clearance before a sale or a big hedge cut in winter.

What clay and a busy stream mean for Salfords gardens

Weald Clay is a mudstone. It holds water through the winter, then dries hard and cracks by late July. Lawns go mossy in the damp months and brown fast in a dry one. Hedges and shrubs, on the other hand, love it, and privet or laurel can put on a surprising amount in a season. Leave a Salfords garden alone for one summer and you’ll see exactly what we mean.

The stream adds its own twist. The Environment Agency’s gauge at Salfords Bridge hit a record level on Christmas Eve 2013, and the stream can still flood in a wet autumn or winter. Gardens beside it get the worst of the wet. So we work with the ground: no mowing on soaked grass, and planting that copes with heavy soil.

The commercial side of Salfords

For a village of a couple of thousand people, there’s a lot of business ground here. Salfords Industrial Estate runs along the A23 and the council counts it among the borough’s two largest. Then there’s Perrywood Business Park on the old Monotype site and Fairlawn Enterprise Park on Bonehurst Road. Add a care home, a primary school, a pub with a hotel beside it, and the recreation ground. For sites like these we write a yearly schedule and fix the price, invoiced monthly or quarterly.

Gardening in Salfords: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Do you cover the whole of Salfords?

Yes. Every street in the village, plus Sidlow, Earlswood, Redhill and Horley around it. We cover about 15 miles round our base, and Salfords is one of the closest places on our patch.

Can you visit while I’m at work?

Yes. Plenty of people in the village are on a Thameslink train by eight. We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, and as long as we can get into the garden you don’t need to be home.

How do I get a quote?
