Hedge Trimming & Hedge Cutting in Copthorne

Hedge trimming in Copthorne

Boundary hedges kept tight and tidy across Copthorne, with every cutting cleared away.

Copthorne is a village of hedges. The council’s character study keeps coming back to them: lanes lined with hedgerows, big houses on Copthorne Road set behind tall, tree-lined hedges, and post-war streets fronted by low hedges and brick walls. Hedge trimming in Copthorne is probably the job we do most there after the grass, and it’s easy to see why.

The fertile, slightly acid soil doesn’t help you keep up. Laurel and privet put on serious growth here, and a hedge left for two summers can swallow a metre of path. We cut, shape and reduce, and every cutting goes in the van.

What we do

  • Regular hedge cutting on a schedule that suits the species
  • One-off cuts to bring overgrown hedges back under control
  • All types: privet, laurel, leylandii, box, beech, hornbeam, yew and more
  • Height and width reductions, staged where needed
  • Laurel cut by hand so the leaves don’t brown
  • Nesting birds checked before any work, all cuttings cleared away

Hedge cutting season and the birds on Copthorne’s edge

With the common, Pot Common and so much woodland round the village, garden hedges here get plenty of nesting birds. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it’s an offence to damage an active nest, and the main season runs roughly March to August. So the heavy cuts and reductions are planned for between September and February. We check every hedge before a trimmer comes out, and if there’s an active nest, that section waits. A light summer trim is fine once we’re sure it’s clear.

Hedge trimming the tall boundaries on Copthorne Road

Hedge cutting in Copthorne gets serious out along Copthorne Road, where plots are large and set deep behind high hedging. Some of those boundaries have been allowed to creep up and out for years. We bring them back in stages, the height one winter and a face the next, so the hedge doesn’t end up bare and brown. Leylandii is the exception: it won’t regrow from old brown wood, so we keep it trimmed in the green. Laurel gets cut with hand tools, so the big leaves aren’t sliced in half and left to brown.

Hedge Trimming in Copthorne: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

How many times a year does a privet hedge need cutting?

Twice a year keeps most privet tidy: once in late spring after a nest check, and again in late summer. On rich soil like Copthorne’s, a vigorous hedge sometimes wants a third. We’ll set a schedule for each hedge and stick to it.

How much do your hedge trimming services cost?

That depends on length, height and type of hedge, how much we’re taking off, and whether we can reach both sides. Regular cuts cost less than rescuing an overgrown hedge. After a look at the hedge, we’ll fix a price you can hold us to.

What happens to all the hedge cuttings?

Every time. Laurel and leylandii make a lot of waste, and none of it ends up in your garden bin. We sweep the path and drive before we go.
