Gritting in Crawley Down, done the evening before
Drives salted ahead of the early commute, and shared paths treated at the village’s sheltered homes.
Gritting in Crawley Down is mostly about timing. Around seven in ten working residents drive to work, and a drive that’s frozen at six in the morning is a poor start to anybody’s day. We start at 7am, so for most commuters the answer is to have the drive salted the evening before a frost. By the time you’re out with the car keys, the salt has had all night to work.
The village also sits higher than people expect. Archaeologists recording one site here put the ground at roughly 113 to 120 metres above sea level, on a north-facing slope. North-facing ground gets very little winter sun, so frost can hang about well into the day. We’re a Horley family firm, five and a half miles away, and we do it all by hand.
What we do
- Front paths, driveways and steps
- Entrances, ramps and side passages to bins
- Car parks and paths at offices, blocks of flats and care homes
- Snow cleared by hand before the surface is salted
- A visit when frost or snow is forecast, or when you ring
- Repeat visits through a cold spell

What gritting in Crawley Down looks like in a frosty week
Say a hard frost is forecast for Tuesday night. If you’re on our winter list, we’ll come round late on the Tuesday, salt the drive and the front path, and message you to say it’s done. If Wednesday brings rain and then another freeze, the first lot will have washed off, so we come back. When it snows instead, the snow is cleared first, while it’s soft and before tyres and feet pack it down, and only then salted. Salt scattered over deep snow just makes slush, and slush is tomorrow’s ice.
Sheltered homes, the school and newer shared paths
Crawley Down has two purpose-built sheltered housing schemes in the centre and plans approved in 2026 include a 70-bed retirement home. For an older resident, ice at the door can mean days indoors. The primary school is full, which means a lot of small feet on its paths each winter morning, and the newer housing on the western side often comes with shared paths and bin stores. For sites like these we write down which entrances, ramps and paths are covered. HSE expects workplaces to manage outdoor slip risk in ice and snow.
Gritting in Crawley Down: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
Can you grit before I leave for work at half six?
We start at 7am, so not on the morning itself. Salting the evening before works better anyway. Salt needs a little time and a little moisture to get going, and it’ll be ready for you when you go.
My drive slopes down to the garage. Is that harder?
A little. On a slope, snow needs clearing promptly, because packed snow on a gradient soon becomes a slide. We clear it while it’s loose, salt the width you walk on, and pay most attention to the bottom, where meltwater gathers and refreezes.
Do you work for residents’ associations and managing agents?
Yes. Blocks of flats and shared areas on newer estates are a good fit. We’ll agree the routes with whoever runs the site and confirm each visit in writing.
