Your gardener in Crawley Down

Lawns, hedges and borders across Crawley Down, from a family-run Horley team trading since 2004.

Crawley Down is its own village, not a suburb of Crawley, and anyone looking for a gardener in Crawley Down usually wants someone who knows the difference. We’re based in Horley, about five and a half miles away, and we’ve been trading since 2004. You get the same team at every visit, the clippings go with us, and you’ll have a fixed quote before anything starts.

The village is younger than it looks. It only took shape once the railway came through in the 1850s, when the line and a brickworks drew houses in around what’s now the village green. Most homes date from two bursts of building: the 1930s and 40s, after the Grange Estate was sold, and the Burleigh Woods development of the 1970s. Newer streets have since been approved west of Turners Hill Road.

What the ground is like under Crawley Down gardens

The village sits on high ground over Upper Tunbridge Wells Sand, a bedrock of sandstone and siltstone. When archaeologists dug trial trenches off Woodlands Close in 2013, they found a firm sandy clay just below the surface. And the Victorians dug clay round here for bricks. So it’s a mixed bag. One garden drains well and goes straw-coloured in July, while a lawn a few roads away holds water in a low corner all winter. We work out which you’ve got on the first visit and plan around it.

What people in the village book us for

Regular maintenance is the big one: a fortnightly visit that covers the lawn, the edges, the beds and whatever the hedges need that month. Gardens from the 1970s building often have boundary hedges with fifty years of growth in them, so hedge work comes a close second. One-off clearances come up when a house changes hands. And with around seven in ten working residents driving off to work each morning, a lot of gardens get looked after while nobody’s home. That suits us fine.

Commercial grounds in and around Crawley Down

Crawley Down’s employers include garages and car sales, food shops, farm shops and the trades. Alongside them there’s a Victorian church and churchyard, a busy primary school, shared green spaces and new housing that often comes with communal areas. Each of those gets a written plan for the year, one agreed price, and an invoice monthly or quarterly as you prefer. We’ll quote against an existing spec, and insurance certificates are available on request.

Gardening in Crawley Down: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Is Crawley Down too far out for you?

No. It’s about five and a half miles from our base in Horley, comfortably inside the 15 or so miles we cover. Copthorne, Turners Hill and East Grinstead are on our patch too, so a Crawley Down garden slots easily into a round.

Do I need to be in when you come?

Not at all. We’re out between 7am and 6pm, six days a week, Sundays off. If we can get into the garden, we’ll get on with it and let you know when we’re done.

How do I get a quote?

Call 07720 886244 and we’ll arrange a time to look. Quotes are free and the price is fixed. It depends on how big the garden is, how easily machinery gets in, and whether you want us weekly, fortnightly or less often.
