A local gardener for Crawley
Garden and grounds care across Crawley’s 14 neighbourhoods, by a family firm 3.5 miles up the road.
Looking for a gardener in Crawley, West Sussex? We’re F. Nutton & Son’s, a family-run firm based in Horley, about 3.5 miles north, and we’ve looked after gardens round here since 2004. Crawley is one of the towns we know best. It’s close enough that a small front lawn is as easy for us to fit in as a weekly round of a big family garden.
Crawley is a new town, designated in January 1947, and most of it was built as planned neighbourhoods, each with its own school, shops and open space. West Green was started in 1949. Forge Wood, still being finished, is the fourteenth. So a garden here is usually somewhere between seventy-odd years old and brand new, and that tells you a lot about what it needs.

What’s under a Crawley garden
Two kinds of rock meet beneath the town. The east of Crawley and the town centre sit mainly on Hastings Beds sandstone, and the rest is Weald Clay. In practice, lawns out west in places like Ifield and Bewbush tend to stay wet all winter and crack in August, while gardens on the sandier eastern side drain quicker and dry out sooner. It’s patchy, though. Clay turns up on the east side too, so we look at each garden rather than going by the postcode.
What people book most is regular maintenance: mowing, edging, hedges and borders on a fortnightly round, with every clipping taken away. After that it’s hedge work, often on boundaries that have been growing as long as the house has stood, and one-off clearances when a house changes hands or tenants.
Grounds work around Manor Royal and Gatwick
Crawley has a lot of commercial ground for its size. Manor Royal alone has over 600 businesses and 32,800 jobs, and Gatwick has been inside the borough since 1974. Add the schools, care homes, churches, hotels and blocks of flats, and there’s a fair amount of grass and hedging that somebody has to keep on top of. For those sites we write an annual schedule, fix the price and invoice monthly or quarterly, with insurance certificates on request.

Gardening in Crawley: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
Which parts of Crawley do you cover?
All of it, every neighbourhood plus the business estates around Manor Royal and Gatwick. We’re based in Horley and cover about 15 miles around, so Copthorne, Crawley Down and Charlwood are on the round too.
Will it be the same people each time?
Yes. The same team comes every visit, so you’re not explaining the garden to a stranger each fortnight. We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, and you don’t need to be home as long as we can get in.
How much does a gardener in Crawley cost?
We don’t have a price list, because two gardens on the same street can be very different jobs. It depends on size, access and how often you want us. Ring 07720 886244 and we’ll come and look, then give you a fixed quote for free.
