Topiary & Ornamental Hedging in Edenbridge

Topiary in Edenbridge

Box balls, yew cones and formal shapes kept crisp in Edenbridge gardens.

Topiary in Edenbridge has a famous neighbour. Hever Castle, just down the river, has topiary in its gardens and a yew maze planted in 1904. Most of us work on a smaller scale: a pair of box balls by the front door, a yew cone in a border, a clipped bay in a pot.

Whatever the size, topiary needs a steady hand and regular trims to stay sharp. We cut detailed shapes by hand, step back to check them from a distance, and clear up every clipping before we go. Regular trims go into a schedule, so shapes never drift far enough to need rescuing.

More about topiary

Topiary & Ornamental Hedging in Edenbridge

Topiary pruning through the year

Yew is the most forgiving topiary plant for Edenbridge clay. It copes with heavy soil as long as its roots aren’t sitting in water, and it regrows from old wood, so a lopsided shape can be put right. One trim in late summer usually keeps it crisp. Box wants a trim in late spring or early summer, and sometimes again later. Privet and Lonicera nitida grow fast on fertile ground and may need three or four trims a year to hold a sharp outline. Bay is slower and fine with one or two.

An honest word about box

Box blight and box tree moth have hit a lot of gardens in the south east. Blight leaves brown, bare patches. The caterpillars strip a ball from the inside, often before anyone notices. We check for both every time we trim, and we’ll tell you straight if a plant is past saving. Where box has gone, yew, Ilex crenata or Lonicera nitida make good replacement topiary balls. On damp clay we’d put yew in the best-drained spot you have, or grow the replacement in a pot with decent drainage.

Topiary in Edenbridge: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Can you create a new topiary shape?

We can train a young plant into a ball, cone or simple spiral over a few seasons. Detailed animal shapes take years and a frame, and we’ll be honest about what’s realistic.

Can overgrown topiary trees be saved?

Yew nearly always can, by cutting back hard over two seasons. Healthy box will recover from a moderate cut. Conifers like leylandii won’t regrow from bare brown wood, so there’s far less room for error.

Do you look after topiary in pots?

Yes. Potted box and bay dry out quickly in summer, so we’ll check the compost each visit and tell you if they need more water or a feed.
