Churches, parish councils and community grounds in Lingfield

Churchyard grass cutting in Lingfield

Careful mowing round old stones, and tidy grounds for Lingfield’s churches and parish spaces.

St Peter and St Paul is one of Lingfield’s three Grade I listed buildings, rebuilt in 1431 around an older tower, and its churchyard holds listed tombs of its own. Churchyard grass cutting in Lingfield, there or at any old burial ground, needs slow, careful work round stones that can’t be replaced.

We work for churches, parish councils and community groups, to an existing specification or one we write together. Wildflower areas can be left long and cut once in late summer. Visits fit your diary, and the same team comes each time.

What we look after

  • Churchyard paths and mown areas
  • Careful strimming round headstones
  • Hedges and boundary walls kept clear
  • Village greens and verges
  • Wildflower areas on a late-summer cut
  • Leaf clearance from paths and porches
  • Church paths gritted ahead of services in icy weather

More about churches and councils

Churchyard grass cutting in Lingfield round listed tombs

The Hale Tomb and the Jewell Tomb in the churchyard are both Grade II listed, and so is the war memorial in the conservation area. Old ground round graves is rarely level, and weathered stone chips easily. So we strim by hand around memorials rather than let a mower near an edge, and lift cuttings off stones rather than blow them across. Trees we leave alone. In a conservation area they need six weeks’ notice to the council, and the work belongs with an arborist.

Parish council grass cutting contracts

Lingfield Parish Council has been working through its play areas, with Jenner’s Playground refurbished and Talbot Road’s playground and the skatepark in the programme. It even keeps council tools in the Cage, a Grade I lock-up from 1773. Spaces like these, along with verges and burial grounds, often need someone to take on a single site to a clear spec. That’s work we do regularly. We’ll price each line, cut to an agreed regime and check the diary before every visit.

Churches and councils in Lingfield: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Can some of the churchyard be kept as meadow?

Yes. We mow paths through the long grass, cut it once in late summer and rake the cuttings off, so the ground stays poor enough for wildflowers to hold on.

Who looks after a closed churchyard?

Once a churchyard is formally closed for burials, the parochial church council can ask the local council to take over its upkeep. Whichever body holds the responsibility, we’re happy to quote for closed churchyard maintenance.

Will you work around funerals and services?

Always. We check with the churchwarden or parish office before each visit and stay well clear during services, weddings and funerals.

Can you price a parish council grass cutting contract?

Yes. Send over the tender documents and we’ll return a priced schedule, item by item. Bundling several sites on one contract works well for us.

Do you cut cemeteries too?

Yes, with the same care as a churchyard: hand strimming round memorials, paths kept clear for visitors, and cuttings lifted off the stones.

Walk the site with us.

We’ll come out, look at the grounds with you and send a written schedule and a fixed price for the year.
