A local gardener for Lingfield

Lawns, hedges and grounds around Lingfield’s old village, its lanes and the racecourse side.

Looking for a gardener in Lingfield? We’re about seven miles away in Horley, and we’ve been looking after gardens in this part of Surrey since 2004. It’s the same team at every visit, which matters out here. Ground in the far south-east corner of the county has its own habits, and the geology map and the spade don’t always agree.

Lingfield is really two old settlements joined up. Old Town grew round the church, Plaistow Street round the pond and the Cage, and the houses that followed the railway in 1884 and the racecourse in 1890 filled the gap between. So gardens vary a lot: cottage plots in the conservation area, Victorian houses near the High Street, and newer homes on the edges.

What Lingfield gardens ask for most

Most people here book regular grass cutting and hedge work, usually as part of a fortnightly visit. The soil explains why. When trial trenches went in at Pond Farm on Godstone Road in 2017, the map said Tunbridge Wells Sand, but the ground came up as yellow-brown silty clay under roughly 20cm of topsoil. That packs down when it’s wet and dries out fast when it isn’t. Lawns go mossy in winter and thin in August.

The village is ringed by Green Belt fields and woods, so plenty of gardens back onto hedgerows. That means brambles creeping under fences, a heavy fall of oak leaves, and birds in every hedge. A back boundary like that deserves as much care as the front one. We check for nests before any cut, and keep the main hedge work to autumn and winter, once the birds have finished.

Grounds care for Lingfield schools, care homes and businesses

Lingfield has more commercial ground than a village of its size usually does. There’s the racecourse with its hotel and golf course, Lingfield College on two sites, the St Piers campus, a primary school on Vicarage Road, several care homes, old pubs with gardens and two business parks out at Felcourt. For sites like these we write an annual schedule, agree a fixed price and invoice monthly or quarterly. Insurance certificates are available on request, and we’re happy to quote against your existing spec.

Gardening in Lingfield: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Do you really come out to Lingfield from Horley?

Yes. It’s about seven miles, well inside the 15 or so miles we cover, and we work across Lingfield and the villages nearby. Dormansland, Felcourt and the lanes towards Blindley Heath are all on our patch too.

Do I need to be in when you visit?

No. Plenty of people here are on a train to Victoria or London Bridge by the time we pull up. We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, and as long as we can get into the garden we’ll get on with it.

How do I get a quote?

Ring 07720 886244 and we’ll come over, walk round with you and give you a fixed price. There’s no charge for that. The figure depends on the size of the garden, the access and how often you’d like us.
