Shrub pruning in Nutfield
Roses, flowering shrubs and climbers pruned plant by plant, at the right time for each.
Shrub pruning in Nutfield often starts with a garden that’s older than its owners. Plenty of the larger houses went up after 1884, when the station opened and the Victorians built mansion houses for the views over the South Downs. An old garden like that can hide some giants: lilacs gone bare at the base, rhododendrons the size of a shed, philadelphus that only flowers at the very top.
We prune plant by plant, at the time each one wants, so tidying a shrub doesn’t cost you next year’s flowers. Prunings are bagged and taken away the same day. Most gardens need a visit or two a year for it, and it slots easily into a regular maintenance round.
What we do

- Rose pruning in late winter, deadheading through summer
- Shaping and thinning to keep growth healthy
- Renovating overgrown shrubs over a season or two
- Cutting back perennials and ornamental grasses
- All prunings cleared away

Shrub pruning in Nutfield: timing on sand and clay
Timing comes first. Spring flowerers like forsythia, weigela and philadelphus are cut just after they flower. Shrubs that flower on new wood, buddleja for one, get cut hard in early spring. Roses have their main prune in late winter. Soil then changes the recovery. On South Nutfield’s clay, a hard cut usually bounces back fast. On the dry greensand up the hill, we’d go gentler, spread a big renovation over two or three years, and mulch afterwards so the plant isn’t short of water while it regrows.
Shrubs, not trees, and the village’s protected ones
Trees are a different trade: we don’t climb, fell or reshape tree crowns. That line matters in Nutfield, because Tandridge has tree preservation orders in the parish, including one covering trees at Nutfield Court on Church Hill and another on land by Kings Cross Lane in South Nutfield. Our pruning services stop at shrubs, roses, climbers and hedge and shrub pruning at border level. If something bigger needs attention, we’ll say so, and suggest a qualified arborist and a check with the council first.
Pruning in Nutfield: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
My shrubs have taken over. Can they be cut right back?
Usually, if you give it two or three seasons. We take out a third of the oldest stems each year so the plant keeps flowering while it shrinks. Lavender and a handful of others won’t reshoot from old wood, so we’ll point those out before we start.
When do you prune roses?
The main prune is late winter, usually February. We deadhead through summer to keep the flowers coming, and climbers are tied in during autumn.
Do you offer one-off shrub pruning services?
Yes. We’ll quote a fixed price after seeing how many shrubs there are and how far they’ve grown. Taking the prunings away is included.
