Your gardener in Nutfield and South Nutfield

Sandy hilltop gardens and heavy clay ones below the station, looked after by a Horley team.

If you’re after a gardener in Nutfield, the first thing worth knowing is that the parish has two kinds of ground. The old village and its church sit on the greensand hill by the A25. South Nutfield, which grew up round the station after 1884 and is now the bigger of the two, is down on Wealden Clay. We’re about five miles away in Horley, so it’s an easy run.

That split shapes almost every job. Up top, the soil drains quickly and lawns brown early in a dry summer. Below the railway, the same week of rain leaves lawns soft for days. We’ve been doing this since 2004, and we treat the two halves as different gardens, because they are.

The houses vary as much as the soil. The 2011 census counted 371 detached homes in the parish, 305 semis, 254 terraces and 147 flats, and the Victorians built big houses here for the views over the South Downs. So one round can take in a long lawn with mature hedges, a neat garden near the station and shared grounds at a converted country house.

What people in Nutfield usually book

Most of our Nutfield work is a regular visit: grass cutting, edging, border weeding and hedges, every fortnight through the growing season. The bigger plots on the hill often want weekly cuts in May and June and a proper autumn hedge cut, because a long boundary grows faster than anyone wants to trim it on a Saturday. In South Nutfield the clay sets the pace for mowing, so cuts there wait for a dry day and start high in spring.

Grounds work in a Green Belt village

Nutfield is a village, not a business town, and the Green Belt keeps it ringed by farmland. So the commercial work here has a village character. Think of shared grounds round flats and converted houses, the churchyards at St Peter and St Paul’s and Christ Church, a primary school, old pubs with gardens, and the hotel at Nutfield Priory. Sites like those get a written annual schedule, a fixed price invoiced monthly or quarterly, and insurance certificates on request.

Gardening in Nutfield: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Do you cover South Nutfield and Nutfield Marsh as well?

Yes. The whole parish sits well inside our patch, which runs about 15 miles round Horley. That takes in the High Street end, South Nutfield and the lanes up towards Nutfield Marsh, plus Redhill, Bletchingley and Salfords next door.

Is the soil really that different across the village?

It is. The village and church sit on greensand, which is sandy and drains fast, while the lower half of the parish is Wealden Clay, which holds water. There’s even fuller’s earth, a greasy clay, dug from pits along the ridge. We plan mowing, mulching and planting around whichever one you’re on.
