Leaf clearance and seasonal garden jobs in Outwood
Autumn leaf clearance under Outwood’s oaks, plus the spring, summer and winter jobs in between.
Oak is the tree of Outwood. The common still has ancient oaks from when commoners took timber there, and the woods round the village hold plenty more. Oaks hang on to their leaves late, then let go in a rush. Leaf clearance in Outwood is a proper job, because a lawn left under a wet mat of oak leaves for a month goes yellow and mossy underneath.
So we do it in rounds. Once the first big fall is down, again a couple of weeks later, and a final sweep when the trees are bare. Leaves come off lawns, beds, paths and gravel and from round pond edges, and all of it goes away with us.
What we do
- Spring: cutting back, first cuts, mulching, getting ahead of weeds
- Summer: regular upkeep, deadheading, late-summer hedge cuts
- Autumn: leaf clearance, planting, major hedge reductions
- Winter: dormant hedge renovation, rose pruning, mulching
- One-off seasonal jobs as well as regular contracts
- All seasonal work built into regular maintenance at no extra charge

Leaf clearance first, then an autumn garden tidy up
Once the leaves are off, the autumn garden tidy up here carries on. It’s the last cut of the year with the mower set a touch higher. It’s cutting back perennials that have collapsed, though we’ll leave seed heads standing if you like them for the birds. It’s the main hedge cut, now nesting has finished. And it’s when we recut the lawn edges, while the clay is soft enough to take a clean line but not yet waterlogged.
Seasonal garden maintenance for the rest of the year
Spring means cutting back, the first high mow once the clay will bear weight, and a mulch on the beds before the weeds wake up. Summer is upkeep: mowing, deadheading and a light trim on hedges checked for nests. Winter is for structural work, with roses pruned, overgrown shrubs and hedges renovated while they’re dormant, and beds mulched again. On a regular contract all of that seasonal garden maintenance comes as part of the visit at no extra charge. Any of it can be booked as a one-off as well.
Seasonal Services in Outwood: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
When should leaves come off the lawn?
As soon as there’s a decent layer, and certainly before they’ve lain there for weeks. Grass under wet leaves loses light and starts to yellow within a fortnight or so. Two or three clears through the autumn is usually right under oaks.
Can you leave a leaf pile for hedgehogs?
Of course. We’ll heap some leaves in a quiet corner, under a hedge or behind a shed, and take the rest. It’s a good use for them in a village with this much wildlife.
Do you do a one-off autumn garden clean up?
Yes. One visit in late October or November to clear leaves, cut back the borders, give the lawn its last cut and do the hedges. Plenty of people book that and look after the garden themselves the rest of the year.
