Leaf clearance and seasonal garden care in Charlwood
Autumn leaves, winter hedge work and spring wake-ups for Charlwood gardens, done when they’re due.
Leaf clearance in Charlwood is a proper autumn job. The village is ringed by woodland and old hedgerows, with Glover’s Wood right on its edge, and oak and hornbeam leaves end up in gardens whether you own a tree or not. Left on a lawn, they smother the grass. Left on paving over clay, they turn a path into a skating rink.
That’s one season. The others matter just as much. Our seasonal garden maintenance follows the year: waking a garden up in spring, keeping on top of it in summer, clearing down in autumn and doing the structural work in winter. Each visit does what that month needs, so nothing gets left until it’s a bigger job.

Leaf clearance and the autumn tidy up on Wealden Clay
Once October arrives we clear leaves off lawns, beds, paths and drives, and take them away. We cut back spent perennials, though we’ll leave seed heads standing if you like them for the birds. Autumn is also when the clay is still workable, so it’s the time for planting bulbs before the ground gets too wet. By December much of it is sodden, so we stay off the lawns and turn to hedges and shrubs instead.
Winter, spring and summer in a Charlwood garden
Winter is for structure: big hedge reductions while no birds are nesting, rose pruning towards the end of it, and mulching the borders. Spring means cutting back grasses and perennials, the first high cut of the lawn once the clay has dried, and getting ahead of the weeds before they get ahead of you. Summer is steady upkeep. That’s mowing, deadheading, keeping pots going, and a light hedge trim once we’ve checked for nests.
Seasonal Services in Charlwood: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
How often should leaves be cleared?
In a garden near woodland, every couple of weeks through October and November is about right. One big clear at the end leaves the lawn yellow underneath. Regular customers get it built into their visits.
Can you do a one-off autumn garden maintenance visit?
Yes. Plenty of people book a single autumn tidy to get the garden ready for winter. We’ll clear leaves, cut back, tidy the hedges and take it all away.
Is seasonal work extra on a regular contract?
No. Seasonal jobs are built into regular maintenance at no extra charge. The visits simply change with the time of year.
When should the first spring cut happen in Charlwood?
Usually late March or April, once the clay has dried enough to walk on without leaving footprints. The first cut is a high one, just taking the tips off.
