Leaf clearance and seasonal gardening in Crawley Down
Autumn leaves cleared, winter jobs done and the garden set up properly for spring.
Leaf clearance in Crawley Down is a proper autumn job. The village sits in a patchwork of fields, shaws and woodland, with pockets of ancient woodland still about, and the old railway line through its middle has grown into a strip of mature trees. By late October a lot of that canopy is on lawns, paths and drives.
Leaves left on a lawn for a few weeks block the light, and the grass underneath goes yellow. On paths and steps they turn slippery fast. We clear them from lawns, beds, paths and patios, and take them away. Then the lawn gets a last high cut if it needs one.
What we do
- Spring: cutting back, first cuts, mulching, getting ahead of weeds
- Summer: regular upkeep, deadheading, late-summer hedge cuts
- Autumn: leaf clearance, planting, major hedge reductions
- Winter: dormant hedge renovation, rose pruning, mulching
- One-off seasonal jobs as well as regular contracts
- All seasonal work built into regular maintenance at no extra charge

Leaf clearance and an autumn garden tidy, in stages
We’d usually suggest two or three autumn visits rather than one big one at the end. Leaves come down in waves, with the oaks among the last, and a single clearance in late November means the lawn has sat under a mat for weeks. Each autumn garden tidy covers the leaves, the last high cut of the lawn, cutting back collapsed perennials and the main hedge cuts now nesting is over. It’s good planting weather too, while the soil’s still warm.
Seasonal garden maintenance through winter and spring
Winter is for the structural work. Deciduous hedges can be reduced while they’re bare, roses get their main prune in February, and borders get a mulch while the ground is damp. Spring is the reset: the first lawn cut on a high setting, edges recut and border weeds dealt with before they set seed. Seasonal garden maintenance like this is built into regular visits at no extra charge, or we’ll book it as one-off jobs. In a hard frost we keep off the lawn altogether.
Seasonal Services in Crawley Down: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
Can you clear leaves out of gutters?
We don’t go up ladders to roof gutters. We do clear leaves from ground-level drains, gullies, paths and patios, which is where they cause most trouble in a garden.
How many leaf clearance visits will I need?
For a garden near big trees, two or three between mid October and early December usually does it. With only a couple of small trees, one visit once they’re bare is plenty.
What happens to the leaves?
We take them away with everything else. If you’d like to keep some for leaf mould, we’re happy to fill a bin or a mesh cage for you and take the rest.
