Gritting & Snow Clearance in Edenbridge

Gritting and snow clearing in Edenbridge

Hand gritting for wet valley ground, where paths hold water and freeze hard by morning.

Edenbridge sits low in the valley of the River Eden, just inside the northern fringe of the Weald Clay. That’s the starting point for gritting in Edenbridge. Clay won’t let rain soak away, so paths, steps and drives stay damp long after a shower, and damp is what turns to ice on a clear night. We salt them by hand before it freezes.

We’re about ten miles away in Horley, over the county line, and we come across for homes and businesses in the town and the villages round it. Ring us when the forecast turns, or agree your paths before winter and we’ll treat them each time frost or snow is due.

What we do

  • Front paths, driveways and steps
  • Entrances, ramps and side passages to bins
  • Car parks and paths at offices, blocks of flats and care homes
  • Snow cleared by hand before the surface is salted
  • A visit when frost or snow is forecast, or when you ring
  • Repeat visits through a cold spell

Gritting & Snow Clearance in Edenbridge

Why Edenbridge paths ice up after the rain

The Eden has a long habit of spilling over. It flooded the town centre in 1958 and 1968, and burst its banks in December 2019. Even in an ordinary winter the low ground near the river stays wet, and so do the paths and patios on it. A cold snap after a wet week is the one to watch. Water in the joints of block paving and in the hollow at the foot of a drive freezes first, so that’s where the salt goes. We keep it off hedge roots and lawn edges, where the damage shows as brown in spring.

Gritting in Edenbridge for care homes and business units

The council’s character study of the town notes several care homes, a large primary school and three 1960s industrial estates with a lot of hard surfacing. As a gritting company we treat entrances, ramps, paths between buildings, bin store paths and car parks, all done on foot. HSE guidance asks workplaces to deal with slippery outdoor routes in winter, and a care home with visitors arriving all morning is where that really counts. For commercial gritting we agree a written plan, so everyone knows which routes come first.

Gritting in Edenbridge: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Edenbridge is in Kent. Do you still come over?

Yes. It’s about ten miles from our base, inside the 15 miles or so we cover, and the county line makes no difference. Winter work goes best when it’s planned, so tell us which paths before the cold sets in.

Our path floods in a wet winter. Is there any point gritting it?

Not while it’s under water, because the salt just washes off. Once the water has drained and the path is merely wet, that’s the moment to salt it, before the temperature falls.

Can you grit the shared paths at our block of flats?

Yes. Communal entrances, the path to the bin store and the residents’ car park are exactly the ground we treat. Whoever manages the block agrees the routes with us in writing, and we report back after each visit.

Ready for the first frost in Edenbridge?

Tell us which paths, steps and drives need doing. We’ll clear and grit them when the weather turns.
