Gritting & Snow Clearance in Lingfield

Gritting and snow clearance in Lingfield

Paths and entrances in a low, damp Wealden village, salted by hand before the frost sets in.

Lingfield sits low. The parish only rises to about 76 metres at the golf course and drops to roughly 46 along the Eden Brook to the north, so damp air and wet ground are part of every winter. Our gritting in Lingfield is done by hand and on foot: we clear any snow off the paths, steps, ramps and entrances people actually use, then salt them.

We’re based in Horley, about seven miles west, and the same team comes each time. Ring us when the forecast turns, or agree a list of paths in the autumn and we’ll watch the forecast for you, then tell you once we’ve been.

What we do

  • Front paths, driveways and steps
  • Entrances, ramps and side passages to bins
  • Car parks and paths at offices, blocks of flats and care homes
  • Snow cleared by hand before the surface is salted
  • A visit when frost or snow is forecast, or when you ring
  • Repeat visits through a cold spell

Gritting & Snow Clearance in Lingfield

Gritting Lingfield paths that sit on wet ground

The maps put much of Lingfield on Tunbridge Wells Sand, but when trial trenches were dug on the village’s western edge in 2017, the ground came up as silty clay. It holds water, and the neighbourhood plan has had to deal with flooding near the station. Then a clear night comes along and the wet sets into a thin glaze you can barely see.

That’s why we salt early. Salt needs a little moisture and time to work, and Lingfield is rarely short of moisture. A light scatter the afternoon or evening before a frost beats a heavy one after somebody’s gone over. If snow comes, we clear it first while it’s soft, then salt what’s underneath.

Care homes, schools and the racecourse side of the village

For a village of under 5,000 people, Lingfield has a lot of places where people arrive on foot in the dark. There are care homes, a primary school, Lingfield College on its two sites, the St Piers campus, and the hotel and business units out towards the racecourse and Felcourt. HSE expects workplaces to keep outdoor routes safe in ice and snow, which usually means the walk between where people park and the front door. For sites like these our gritting service is agreed in writing before winter.

Gritting in Lingfield: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

We live near the church in the old village. Will salt mark our stone paths and steps?

It can. Limestone and reconstituted stone react badly to salt, so tell us what your paths are made of when you book. We use a lighter scatter on anything delicate and keep salt away from old garden walls and the beds beside them.

Can I book gritting for a parent who lives in Lingfield?

Yes. Give us the address and tell us how they come and go, usually the front path and steps, sometimes the side passage to the bins. We’ll treat those whenever frost or snow is forecast and message you afterwards.

Do you do one-off snow clearance in Lingfield?

Yes. Ring when it snows and we’ll get to you as soon as we can, though everyone rings on the same morning. Customers on an agreed winter list are already planned in, which is the safer bet if you can’t risk being snowed in.

Ready for the first frost in Lingfield?

Tell us which paths, steps and drives need doing. We’ll clear and grit them when the weather turns.
