Topiary in Epsom
Box, yew and privet shapes kept crisp, with honest advice on blight and box moth.
Topiary in Epsom turns up everywhere once you start noticing it: a pair of box balls by a Victorian front door, a clipped yew in a long back garden, a privet hedge with a shaped top. It needs a patient eye and regular attention, and it’s the sort of slow, careful work we enjoy.
If you’re planning new topiary, yew is the safest bet anywhere in town. It’s at home on chalk, copes with clay as long as it isn’t sitting in water, and will regrow from old wood if a shape ever needs rescuing. Box is lovely but has real problems now, which we’ll be honest about.

Topiary pruning: how often, and when
Box wants a trim in late spring or early summer and another in late summer, which keeps topiary balls tight and round. Yew is happiest with one cut in late summer, and that holds its shape well into the next year. Privet grows fast and needs more frequent attention. Small shapes we do with hand shears, because a powered trimmer takes too much off too quickly on a tight curve. Every clipping is cleared, and with box we bag it all to avoid spreading disease.
Box blight, box moth and what to plant instead
Box blight loves damp, still air, so it’s worst in sheltered gardens and in wet summers. Box tree moth is now common across the South East and can strip a plant in weeks. We’ll check your box each visit and tell you what we see. If a plant is badly hit, replacing it is often better than fighting on, and yew or a small-leaved holly makes a good substitute for most shapes.
Topiary in Epsom: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
Can you reshape an overgrown topiary piece?
Usually, yes. We bring it back over a season or two rather than all at once, so the plant isn’t shocked and the shape stays even.
Should I replace my box?
Not automatically. If it’s healthy, keep it and keep an eye on it. If blight or moth keeps coming back, yew is the replacement we’d recommend for Epsom gardens.
Do you take the clippings away?
Always. Box clippings especially are bagged and removed, as leaving them on the ground can spread blight.
How much does topiary upkeep cost?
It depends on how many pieces you have, their size and how often they need cutting. A pair of box balls is a quick job, while a run of clipped yew takes longer. We’ll give you a fixed price after a look.
