Seasonal garden maintenance in Epsom
A year of garden work timed for Epsom’s wet clay winters and dry chalk summers.
Seasonal garden maintenance in Epsom is about getting ahead of the year rather than chasing it. Spring is first cuts and cutting back. Summer is upkeep and deadheading. Autumn brings leaves and the big hedge work, and winter is for rose pruning and the structural jobs. The list is the easy bit. The timing is what makes it work.
Epsom’s two soils shift the calendar. Chalk gardens warm up and dry out earlier in spring, while clay stays cold and wet for weeks longer. So a clay garden near Horton and a chalk garden up by the Downs might get the same job a few weeks apart.
What we do
- Spring: cutting back, first cuts, mulching, getting ahead of weeds
- Summer: regular upkeep, deadheading, late-summer hedge cuts
- Autumn: leaf clearance, planting, major hedge reductions
- Winter: dormant hedge renovation, rose pruning, mulching
- One-off seasonal jobs as well as regular contracts
- All seasonal work built into regular maintenance at no extra charge

An autumn garden tidy up when the leaves come down
Leaf clearance is the big autumn job, especially in the leafier streets and anywhere near the Common’s woodland. Leaves left on a lawn for a month smother the grass and leave yellow patches, and on paths they turn slippery. We clear lawns, beds, paths and drains through October and November. It’s also when the major hedge cuts and reductions start, once nesting has finished, and when bulbs go in for spring.
A garden maintenance schedule for winter and spring
Winter is quieter but not empty. We don’t walk on frozen lawns or on clay that’s waterlogged, so visits shift to the jobs that don’t hurt the ground: rose pruning around February, renovating hedges while they’re dormant, and mulching beds. Spring follows on with cutting back perennials and grasses, the first high cut of the lawn, and getting ahead of the weeds before they seed. On the chalk, that spring mulch is worth doing every year, because it’s the cheapest way to get a border through a dry June.
Seasonal Services in Epsom: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
Can I book just an autumn clear-up?
Yes. One-off seasonal visits are fine, though they need fitting into our Epsom days, so ring a few weeks ahead in October.
Is seasonal work extra on a regular contract?
No. If we already look after your garden, the seasonal jobs are built into the visits at no extra charge.
When does the first spring cut happen here?
On the chalk it’s often late March. On heavy clay it can be April before the ground is firm enough, and we’d rather wait than leave ruts in your lawn.
Do you clear leaves out of gutters?
No, we stay on the ground. We clear lawns, beds, paths and drains at ground level, and that’s where most of the damage from leaves happens anyway.
