Topiary & Ornamental Hedging in Horne

Topiary in Horne

Clipped yew, box and formal shapes kept sharp around Horne’s older houses and farmhouses.

Horne has 36 listed buildings, many of them old farmhouses and barns, and clipped greenery sits well beside old brick and tile. Topiary in Horne might be a pair of box balls by a front door, a yew cone in a cottage border or a low hedge edging a path. Each one needs a patient hand and a regular trim to keep its outline.

We clip by eye and with hand shears where the detail matters. The cuttings go with us. Most topiary only needs a clip or two a year, so it slots neatly into a regular maintenance round. One-off shaping visits are fine too, if you’ve inherited clipped plants that have lost their outline.

More about topiary

Topiary & Ornamental Hedging in Horne

Box, yew and the box moth question

Box has had a rough decade. Box blight leaves brown patches and bare stems, and box tree moth caterpillars can strip a plant in weeks. If your box is struggling, we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth saving. Sometimes better airflow and hygiene help. Sometimes it’s time to replace. Clipping in dry weather and cleaning blades between plants slows blight down.

Yew is the strongest alternative for a formal look, and it copes well with heavy soil as long as it isn’t sitting in water. On Horne’s clay that means avoiding the wettest spots. Privet and Japanese holly can also stand in for low box hedging.

Topiary pruning when the clay feeds shapes hard

Rich soil means fast growth, and fast growth blurs a shape. Box and yew usually want a main clip in late summer, with a lighter tidy earlier in the season for anything that’s put on a lot. Topiary pruning little and often keeps the surface dense. Leave it a year and the outline gets lost. That’s why a regular hand matters more than one heroic cut a year.

A topiary hedge, with flat tops and square shoulders, takes the same care. We set lines where it matters, so the top runs true along its length.

Topiary in Horne: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

When should box and yew be clipped?

Late summer is the main clip for both, once the nesting season has passed and the spring flush has firmed up. Fast growers may need a light trim earlier.

Can you rescue overgrown topiary balls?

Often, yes. Yew in particular takes hard cutting well and will reshoot from old wood. Box is less forgiving, so we bring it back gradually.

Should I replace my box with something else?

If blight or moth keep coming back, probably. Yew is our usual suggestion for a formal look. We’ll talk it through before anything comes out.
