Churches, parish councils and community grounds in Oxted

Churchyard grass cutting in Oxted

Careful mowing round old stones for Oxted churchyards, chapels and community green spaces.

St Mary the Virgin on Church Lane is Grade I listed, with a 12th-century tower, a 13th-century chancel and later aisles and porch, and its churchyard is thought to point to a church on the site before the Norman Conquest. Churchyard grass cutting in Oxted, there or at any old church, needs patience and a light touch.

We mow, strim by hand round memorials, keep paths clear for funerals and visitors, and leave wildflower areas long if that’s what your parish wants. We’ll work to an existing specification or write one with you, and check the diary before every visit.

What we look after

  • Churchyard paths and mown areas
  • Careful strimming round headstones
  • Hedges and boundary walls kept clear
  • Village greens and verges
  • Wildflower areas on a late-summer cut
  • Leaf clearance from paths and porches
  • Church paths gritted ahead of services in icy weather

Churches, parish councils and community grounds in Oxted

Churchyard grass cutting at an ancient parish church

Old churchyards are rarely level. Centuries of burials leave dips and humps, stones lean, and older memorials can be fragile. A mower deck catching an edge does damage that can’t be undone, so around graves we strim by hand and take our time. We’d rather a visit ran long than chip a headstone. Trees are a separate matter. Churchyard trees often need consent before any work, and we don’t do tree work, so we’ll point you to an arborist if something needs attention.

Churchyard maintenance at newer churches and community spaces

Not every church in town is medieval. St John’s in Hurst Green was consecrated in 1913, and Oxted has several 20th-century churches, including All Saints’ Catholic Church and the Church of the Peace of God. Their grounds still need regular mowing, hedges kept off paths and leaves cleared from porches. Community groups with a green, a garden or a verge to look after are in the same boat. A single site on its own contract suits us well.

Churches and councils in Oxted: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Could part of our churchyard be left as meadow?

Yes. We’ll mow paths through meadow areas and cut the long grass once in late summer, then rake it off so the ground stays poor enough for wildflowers to compete.

Will you tender for a parish council grass cutting contract?

Yes. Send the specification and schedule and we’ll price it properly, line by line. Grounds spread between Old Oxted and Hurst Green can sit on one contract.

Do you do cemetery grass cutting?

Yes. It’s the same careful job as a churchyard: hand strimming round memorials, paths kept clear for visitors and work planned around funerals.

Will you work around services?

Always. We check with the churchwarden or parish office before each visit and stay well away during services, weddings and funerals.

Walk the site with us.

We’ll come out, look at the grounds with you and send a written schedule and a fixed price for the year.
