A gardener for Oxted and Hurst Green

Regular garden care across Oxted, Old Oxted, Hurst Green and Holland, nine miles from our Horley base.

Looking for a gardener in Oxted? It helps to know the town sits on two very different soils. The centre and Old Oxted are on greensand, a sandy, iron-stained rock that lets water straight through. Head south into Hurst Green and Holland and you’re on Weald Clay, which does the opposite. We come over from Horley, about nine miles, and plan each garden around the ground it’s really on.

Oxted grew fast once the railway opened in 1884, with New Oxted built around the station in a Tudor style with stucco fronts. So the gardens vary a lot. There are the older streets near the centre, the medieval layout of Old Oxted, the large Arts and Crafts houses the town is known for, and the almost wholly residential spread of Hurst Green and Holland.

We’re F. Nutton & Son’s, a family-run team trading since 2004. The same people come every visit, the clippings go with us, and we never mow wet or frozen grass. Quotes are free.

What Oxted gardens ask of us most

Most people book a regular visit, fortnightly or monthly, with the lawn, hedges and borders rolled into one. In the middle of town the lawn is usually the first worry. Sandy ground browns early in a dry summer and gives up its goodness quickly, so we cut higher and lean on mulch in the beds. In Hurst Green the worry flips to soft, wet lawns in winter and hedges that bolt on fertile clay. The bigger Arts and Crafts gardens mostly want hedge work and pruning done properly.

Old Oxted, conservation areas and the Downs

Old Oxted’s High Street has been a conservation area since 1973, with 21 listed buildings including the Old Bell, the Crown and the George. Station Road West followed in 1990. Trees in both are protected, and work on them needs six weeks’ notice to the council. We don’t do tree work, but we keep the hedges, shrubs and lawns around them in order. North of town the chalk of the North Downs rises, and Oxted sits within the Surrey Hills.

The commercial side of Oxted

As the administrative town of Tandridge, Oxted has offices and shops packed into a centre that straddles the railway. Add the blocks and converted mansions (the 2011 census counted 799 flats), several registered care homes, a busy set of schools and some very old churchyards, and there’s a fair bit of shared ground. Sites like those get a written annual schedule, one fixed price and monthly or quarterly invoices.

Gardening in Oxted: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

Do you really come out to Oxted from Horley?

Yes. It’s about nine miles, well inside the 15 or so we cover. Oxted, Old Oxted, Hurst Green and Limpsfield all sit comfortably on our rounds.

Which part of Oxted has the trickiest soil?

Neither is worse, they’re just different. Sandy greensand in the centre dries out and needs mulching. Clay in Hurst Green holds water and needs patience in winter. We work with whichever one you’ve got.
