Lawn mowing in Oxted
Striped, edged lawns on Oxted’s sandy greensand and Hurst Green’s heavier clay, cut at the right height.
Lawn mowing in Oxted is two different jobs depending on which side of town you’re on. Around the centre and Old Oxted the lawns sit on greensand, a sandy rock that drains fast and dries out early in summer. Down in Hurst Green and Holland they’re on Weald Clay, which holds water for weeks. Same mower, different approach.
We cut with rear-roller Hayter mowers for a proper striped finish, trim the edges every visit and take all the clippings away. Search for garden mowing services near me from an RH8 postcode and you’ll get firms from all over the county. We’re a local lawn mowing service from Horley, nine miles off, on regular weekly or fortnightly rounds.

Why lawn mowing on Oxted greensand means cutting higher
Sandy soil is lovely in March. It warms early and you can walk on it the day after rain, so the first cut often comes sooner here than in the clay parts of Surrey. The catch arrives in June. Greensand holds very little water, and a lawn mown short on it can turn the colour of straw within a dry week. So from early summer we raise the deck and leave more leaf. It shades the soil and slows the drying. The lawn looks a touch softer, but it stays green longer and bounces back faster when the rain returns.
Hurst Green and Holland lawns: wait for the ground
South of the centre the geology changes. Weald Clay comes to the surface under Hurst Green and Holland, with old river gravels from the Eden lying on top in places. Those lawns stay soft long after the town centre has dried out. We never cut wet or frozen grass, but here it really counts, because a mower on soaked clay tears the blades and presses the soil into the sort of crust that moss loves. If it’s too wet we move the visit to the next dry day and let you know.
Lawn Mowing in Oxted: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
How often should an Oxted lawn be cut?
Weekly through May and June suits most lawns, when growth is strongest. After that, fortnightly is usually right on the sandy side of town, because the grass slows as the soil dries. Clay lawns in Hurst Green tend to keep growing further into summer.
My lawn goes brown every July. Is it dead?
Almost certainly not. Grass on dry, sandy ground goes dormant to protect itself and usually greens up within a fortnight of proper rain. Cutting it short while it’s brown is what does the real harm, so we lift the height and cut less often until it recovers.
Do you offer lawn mowing and gardening services together?
Yes. Plenty of people start with the lawn and add hedges and borders later, so one visit covers the lot. It’s often the simplest way to keep a big garden in hand.
What does lawn mowing in Oxted cost?
It depends on the size of the lawn, how easy it is to get the mower to it, and how often we come. A regular slot works out better value per cut than calling us once the grass is knee-high. We’ll look and give you a fixed price.
