Autumn garden tidy up in Oxted

Leaf clearance, cutting back and seasonal jobs done when Oxted’s soil and weather allow.

An autumn garden tidy up in Oxted is mostly about leaves. The town is surrounded by National Trust land, farmland and old woodland, and when the oak and chestnut leaves come down they land everywhere: on lawns, in borders and drifted against fences. Left on the grass for a couple of weeks, they block the light and the lawn yellows underneath.

Our seasonal garden maintenance runs right through the year, though. Spring cut-backs and mulching, summer upkeep, autumn leaf clearance and border tidying, then winter pruning. On a regular visit it’s all built in at no extra charge. As one-offs, we’ll quote each job separately.

What we do

  • Spring: cutting back, first cuts, mulching, getting ahead of weeds
  • Summer: regular upkeep, deadheading, late-summer hedge cuts
  • Autumn: leaf clearance, planting, major hedge reductions
  • Winter: dormant hedge renovation, rose pruning, mulching
  • One-off seasonal jobs as well as regular contracts
  • All seasonal work built into regular maintenance at no extra charge

Seasonal Garden Services in Oxted

Spring comes early on Oxted greensand

Sandy soil warms and dries ahead of clay, so in the middle of town spring jobs can start sooner than they would in Hurst Green. We cut back last year’s perennials and grasses, prune the late-flowering shrubs and get mulch on the borders while the soil is still moist. That last one matters. Mulch laid on dry greensand in May is worth half what the same mulch is in March. Lawns get a first high cut once growth starts. Summer is then higher cuts, deadheading and light hedge trims after nest checks.

What an autumn garden tidy up in Oxted involves

Autumn garden maintenance has a sensible order to it. Leaf clearance comes first, every visit or every other one from October, because wet leaves smother grass and make paths slippery. Then the main hedge cuts, now nesting has finished. Then the borders: cutting back spent growth, lifting and dividing tired perennials and putting down fresh mulch to protect the soil over winter. Winter itself is for rose pruning and renovating deciduous hedges while they’re bare.

Seasonal Services in Oxted: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

When should I book an autumn tidy-up?

Late October or early November catches most of the leaf fall. Gardens near woodland or big trees may want a second visit in late November or December.

Do you do leaf clearance as a one-off?

Yes. Lots of people book one or two leaf visits a year and handle the rest themselves. Everything we clear goes with us.

Why mulch in autumn as well as spring?

On sandy soil, an autumn mulch protects the surface through winter rain and keeps adding organic matter. A spring mulch holds moisture in for summer. Most borders in the centre of town do well with one or the other every year.

Are seasonal jobs extra on a regular visit?

No, they’re already in the plan and the price. If you’re not a regular customer, we’ll price each one as a one-off.
