Most people looking for a gardener in Reigate want someone who turns up on the same day each fortnight and knows what they’re doing. We’re four and a half miles down the road in Horley, and we’ve been looking after gardens in this corner of Surrey since 2004. Same team every visit, clippings taken away, and a fixed price agreed before we start.

Reigate is an odd town for soil. The centre and Reigate Heath sit on the sandy Folkestone Beds, which drain fast and dry out quickly. North of the railway it turns to Gault, a stiff, dark clay. Woodhatch, to the south, is on Weald Clay. Two gardens a mile apart can want completely different handling, and we plan visits with that in mind.

The houses are just as mixed. There are tile-hung cottages and Georgian brick in the old town, Victorian villas along London Road and at Wray Park, and 1930s homes in Woodhatch, built after the farm there was sold off. Each brings its own kind of garden.

What Reigate gardens ask for most

Regular maintenance is the bulk of it: mowing, edging, hedges and borders rolled into one fortnightly visit. On the sand in the middle of town, lawns brown off quickly in a dry summer, so we raise the cut and leave them longer. On Gault and Weald Clay it’s the reverse. Lawns stay soft well into spring, and we won’t mow them waterlogged. Hedges are the other big job. Privet is the commonest hedge in the old town, with yew, holly and both kinds of laurel close behind, and every one of them puts on growth each year.

Older gardens here often have big trees as well, and cedars of Lebanon are something of a Reigate signature. Trees themselves aren’t our job, so we work round them and leave them to the specialists.

Reigate has a working town centre alongside its handsome houses. There’s office space on London Road a couple of minutes from the station, a hotel halfway up Reigate Hill, care homes, a long list of schools and a parish church that goes back to around 1200. Do you cover all of Reigate?

Yes. Woodhatch, South Park, the town centre, the roads up towards Reigate Hill and out by the heath are all on our patch. We cover about 15 miles around Horley, so Redhill and the villages nearby are fine too.

Do I need to be in when you come?

No. We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, and plenty of Reigate households are out all day. As long as we can get into the garden, you don’t need to be home.
