Seasonal garden maintenance in Caterham

Spring cut-backs, summer upkeep, autumn leaves and winter hedge work, planned for gardens on the Downs.

Seasonal garden maintenance in Caterham has to account for height. The town climbs well over a hundred metres between the railway in the valley and the top of the downs, and gardens up there are more exposed to wind and cold than ones down by the station. We plan the year’s jobs around how each garden behaves, not a fixed calendar.

That might mean a spring tidy and first cut, summer upkeep and deadheading, a big autumn clear-down, or winter hedge and rose work. You can book a one-off visit, or have it built into regular maintenance at no extra charge.

What we do

  • Spring: cutting back, first cuts, mulching, getting ahead of weeds
  • Summer: regular upkeep, deadheading, late-summer hedge cuts
  • Autumn: leaf clearance, planting, major hedge reductions
  • Winter: dormant hedge renovation, rose pruning, mulching
  • One-off seasonal jobs as well as regular contracts
  • All seasonal work built into regular maintenance at no extra charge

Leaf clearance in Caterham’s wooded corners

Caterham has a lot of trees for a town. Back in 1848, around 175 acres of the parish were woodland, mostly on the steeper ground, and much of it is still there. So come November, leaf clearance here is a proper job. Wet leaves left on a lawn smother the grass and leave yellow patches by spring. On paths and steps they’re slippery, and on a sloping drive they’re worse. We clear lawns, beds and paths, then come back a few weeks later for the late drop.

Seasonal garden maintenance in Caterham after the leaves

An autumn garden tidy up is when we cut back tired perennials and give hedges their main cut. On the chalk slopes we leave some seed heads standing for the birds and mulch while the ground’s still warm. On the clay-capped ground we keep off lawns once they’ve gone soft. Winter then covers the structural work: hedge renovation, rose pruning and dormant shrubs taken back. Spring starts with a high first cut once the soil has warmed.

Seasonal Services in Caterham: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

When should I book autumn garden maintenance?

Late September or October for the main tidy and hedges, then a follow-up in late November or December for the leaves. Booking in September gives us room to fit both visits in.

Do you do spring tidy-ups too?

Yes. A March or April visit to cut back, weed, mulch and give the lawn its first high cut sets the garden up for the year. On the higher ground we sometimes wait a week or two longer for the soil to warm.

Is seasonal work extra on a maintenance contract?

No. If you’re on regular maintenance, the seasonal jobs are built into your visits. One-off seasonal work is quoted separately.
