Lawn Mowing & Grass Cutting in Earlswood

Lawn mowing in Earlswood

Weekly or fortnightly cuts for Earlswood lawns, timed around clay that stays wet well into spring.

Lawn mowing in Earlswood is mostly about picking the right day. A lot of the ground here is Weald Clay, the same clay that was dug on the common for bricks and tiles for centuries, and it holds water long after a shower has passed. Cut too early in the year, or the morning after heavy rain, and you do the lawn more harm than good.

So we watch the weather and move visits when we need to. When conditions are right, you get a striped finish from a rear-roller Hayter, edges trimmed along every path and border, and the clippings taken away. If you’ve been hunting for a local lawn mowing service, we’re four miles down the road in Horley.

What we do

  • Regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly grass cutting
  • Striped finish with a rear-roller mower
  • Crisp edging along paths, borders and driveways
  • Strimming around trees, posts, fences and obstacles
  • All clippings collected and taken away, every visit
  • Cutting height adjusted through the seasons and in dry spells

Lawn mowing in Earlswood when the clay won’t dry out

The council’s plan for Earlswood Common talks about slowly permeable, seasonally wet clay soils, and many back gardens nearby share them. In March a lawn can look ready while the soil underneath is still soft enough to take a heel print. Put mower wheels on that and you squash the soil, the grass tears instead of cutting cleanly, and next spring there’s moss in the compacted patches. We’d rather wait a week, because good grass cutting on clay is mostly patience. The first cut of the year is a high one, just taking the tips off, and the height comes down gradually as the ground firms up.

Narrow terraced lawns, and lighter ground up the hill

Earlswood’s Victorian terraces often have narrow back gardens, and plenty have no side gate. When there’s no other way in, the mower comes through the house on boards. Mention it when you ring and we’ll plan for it.

Up towards St Johns the soil turns lighter and sandier, and lawns there dry out faster in summer. They want the mower set higher in July. A lawn that hasn’t been scalped will shrug off a dry fortnight far better than one that has.

Lawn Mowing in Earlswood: your questions

Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.

How often should my lawn be cut in Earlswood?

Weekly through May and June suits most lawns here, when the clay is moist and the grass is racing. Fortnightly is right for spring, autumn and dry spells. We’ll suggest a pattern once we’ve seen the lawn and adjust it as the year goes on.

Do you cut in winter?

Rarely. Once growth stops and the clay is wet or frozen, mowing does more damage than good. If a mild, dry spell brings a bit of growth, we might give it a high tidy cut.

What do lawn mowing services cost?

It depends on the size of the lawn, the access and how often you want us. Regular cuts work out better value per visit than one-offs. We’ll come and look, then give you a fixed price.
