Seasonal garden maintenance in Earlswood
Spring tidy-ups, autumn leaf clearance and winter hedge work, timed for Earlswood’s clay and sand.
Seasonal garden maintenance in Earlswood follows the clay. It’s slow to warm in spring, wet for much of winter, and in a hot July it sets hard. So the calendar here runs a little later and a little more carefully than the textbook says, and we work to what the ground is actually doing.
You can book seasonal jobs as one-offs or have them built into a regular visit at no extra charge. Either way, the garden gets the right work when it needs it, and the waste goes with us. If a wet week puts the lawn off limits, the other seasonal jobs still get done.
What we do
- Spring: cutting back, first cuts, mulching, getting ahead of weeds
- Summer: regular upkeep, deadheading, late-summer hedge cuts
- Autumn: leaf clearance, planting, major hedge reductions
- Winter: dormant hedge renovation, rose pruning, mulching
- One-off seasonal jobs as well as regular contracts
- All seasonal work built into regular maintenance at no extra charge

An autumn garden tidy-up under Earlswood’s oaks
Autumn is our busiest season here, mainly because of leaves. The common’s woodland is mostly English oak, and big trees are never far away in Earlswood. Leaf clearance from lawns, beds and paths matters more than people think. A lawn left under wet leaves for a month goes yellow and mossy, and leaves on paths over clay turn slippery. An autumn visit also covers cutting back perennials, the main hedge cuts once nesting has finished, and bulbs in for spring.
Seasonal garden maintenance on clay and greensand
Spring starts with a high first cut once the clay has dried enough to walk on, then cutting back, edging and a mulch on the borders. Summer is regular upkeep and deadheading, with the mower raised in dry spells, especially on the sandy gardens towards St Johns that dry out first. Winter is for structural work: rose pruning, renovating overgrown hedges while they’re dormant, and more mulching. We stay off waterlogged lawns entirely.
Seasonal Services in Earlswood: your questions
Anything else, just ring. You’ll speak to the people who do the work.
When should I book an autumn tidy-up?
Late October into November, once most of the leaves are down, is ideal. For gardens under big oaks, two visits work better: one mid-autumn and one when the last leaves fall.
Can you just do the seasonal jobs?
Yes. Plenty of people book a spring and an autumn visit and look after the rest themselves. We’ll remind you when it’s due if you like.
Is leaf clearance included in regular maintenance?
Yes. If you’re on a regular visit, leaf clearance, cutting back and the other seasonal jobs are part of it at no extra charge.
What’s the first spring job on clay?
Usually a mulch on the borders and a careful first cut, high, once the lawn is firm enough to walk on without leaving prints. Rushing either on wet clay does more harm than waiting a week.
